The Needle Drop: 09-13-08
This week, we've got two heaping doses of emotional music.Okkervil River's new LP, the Stand Ins, is full of things looking to grab and keep your attention: dramatic stories, familiar melodies, and crisp production. On this sequel to the band's previous album, the Stage Names, frontman Will Sheff has done an even better job of paying homage to the history of rock and pop music while creating something intriguing and new.
We've also got a set dedicated to the unwavering and enchanting strangeness of Parenthetical Girls. Entanglements is the group's new album, and it's nothing short of a Disney musical gone twisted. Zac Pennington's vocals mix into the music's lush strings and horns to create something almost magical. Parenthetical Girls can come off as sweet, but the lyrics have a darker side worth listening to.
We've also got new music from the Mountain Goats, Brightblack Morning Light, Deerhoof, and Black Moth Super Rainbow. This is a podcast you can sink your teeth into, young sons.
