Review: Majeure- Timespan
On his solo debut, Zombi's A. E. Paterra proves he's more than just a drummer. For the unfamiliar, Zombi is an instrumental rock duo with a hankering for synthesizer-fueled movie scores. While A. E. Paterra hammers away on the drums, Steve Moore builds looming skyscrapers of synth loops and basslines.
Under Majeure, Paterra is on both synth and drum duty; and even though nobody spins a synth sequence like Steve Moore does, there are a lot of edge-of-your-seat moments on this album.
Timespan is a synthesizer casserole, moving through lenghty cycles of building up and panning out. This LP never approaches the overwhelming size of Zombi, but it doesn't try to. Instead, the devil is in the details. Each build on each track is loaded with finite moments that slowly shift the music from movement to movement. The cathartic tension of Timespan is obviously inspired by the same music as Zombi. Hwever, Paterra executes this record with an unexpected finesse and attention to detail.
With three tracks that span from nine to eighteen minutes, there's no reason to question this LP's ambition. It's the perfect soundtrack to your next covert mission into an underground military base guarded by heavily armed robots looking to fill you with bullets.
